"Not to every young girl is it given to enter the harem of the Sultan of Turkey and return to her homeland a virgin." Now that's what I call an attention getting opening! The Ringed Castle begins book #5 in the series as Philippa returns home to England a very self assured young woman and Francis has hitched his wagon to the mysterious Guzel and heads to Russia to bring Tsar Ivan and his army out of the dark ages with the aid of Francis' highly trained mercenary corps. As Francis treads the treacherous waters of the Russian court and political intrigues, there is a traitor amongst his troop who has been hired to kill him. At the same time, Philippa is called to court to serve as lady in waiting to Mary Tudor and the delightfully evil Countess Margaret Lennox continues her intrigues against Francis and Philippa. Eventually Francis is ordered by the Tsar to leave Russia, and after a harrowing sail through the dangerous waters of the northern seas Francis comes to London as part of Russia's trade embassy. There he is reunited with his wife, Philippa, who has stumbled across a long hidden mystery regarding Francis' paternity.
As with the first four books in the series, Francis Crawford is a fascinating hero, and is as suave, debonair, flawed and fascinating as only a 16th Century version of James Bond could be. While I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I didn't find it as fast paced as the previous four, particularly the time spent in Russia, although necessary to set up the rest of the story. What I very much enjoyed was the maturation of Philippa and she has become the perfect foil for Lymond, she matched word for word in all their verbal battles and was the highlight of the book. I am dying to read the last book in the series, Checkmate: Sixth in the Legendary Lymond Chronicles and anxiously await the answers to just who fathered Francis Crawford of Lymond. Five stars.

The Ringed Castle Book Five in the Legendary Lymond Chronicles Dorothy Dunnett 9780679777472 Books Reviews
Dunnett is the master of historical fiction. The plot takes us from Ivan the Terrible's Russia to Mary's England. Francis, finally falls in love, and we have an O 'Henry type ending which.will force you to read Checkmate which wraps up all the many threads of the saga. For those of us who like Dorothy Dunnetts work and don't have the gift of languages or a classical education I would recommend acquiring the Dorothy Dunnett companion. It will open you eyes to some of the dialogue and allusions. Great book.
Reading on the kindle makes it more breathtaking, for I can look up words that are used in senses I never thought existed (but I don't know much at all about the uses of old English or scots anyway, but still). The scenes come to life and I can see the action unfolding in my mind's eye. This becomes a necessity in order to follow the dialogues at times and following the dialogues and the movements of the characters is also important. The denouements are always surprising, yet always in some small way have been mentioned in the story leading up.
These books are my guilty pleasure.
This is a must read. It can be read on its own as the author fills in most of the blanks but you will enjoy it more if you go back and read the entire series in order. I was satisfied with the ending, but wish she had written more. It is one of those stories that you don't want to put down and as much as I liked it, the author didn't tie up all of the lose ends other than for the main characters, The end felt a little rushed, but this is a well written series over all from a great author.
I love all Dorothy Dunnett's novels; I have all of them in a variety of forms--mostly hardback--and I re-read them at least annually. The Ringed Castle is the 5th in the Lymond series, and it is perhaps, my favorite, although once I re-read the others, I'm sure I'll change my mind.
The story is very well researched and written; the characters are so well written, I feel like they are truly alive, and not fictional.
I recommend all of Dorothy Dunnett's books. If you're a fan of historical fiction, you won't be disappointed.
All of the Dunnett books of the Lymond series are worth every penny. Dorothy shows you the real world and everyday life of the people of the 16th century set in a great romance. Her way of writing is almost musical and reads very easily. They are books that you read over and over again and are never bored.
No one writes better than Dunnett! I am a lifelong fan from the first time I struggled through her book " Queen's Play", then doubled back and read from beginning to end of the series. Exhilarating! Terrifying, and oh so wonderful..it's also a learning experience.. I had to reserach many of the references, but that made it more appealing ...reading, learning, stretching one's imagination, and then on again to the next book
Dorothy Dunnett can twist a tale designed to keep you up at night, in the morning, afternoon, and nighttime too...and The Ringed Castle is no different. Having made himself unwelcome in relatively civilized Western Europe, Lymond heads to Russia to organize and train Ivan the Terrible's soldiers. In the meantime, his casually picked-up wife get attached to the household of Queen Mary Tudor, amid Spanish and English testosterone. Oy. Somehow it all works out to an amazing, thrilling denouement.
Densely researched, meticulously written, and a great deal of good reading fun.

P.S. you can read any of Dorothy's books out of order, but I can guarantee that you will end up reading them IN order once you get started!
