This is a really wonderful book. I bought it for my 11 year old daughter (after she read Fish in a Tree and asked for more by this author) and then I read it myself in a day before handing it over to her. It is extremely well written, and does an incredible job of presenting a child's point of view of the foster care system (see also: The Great Gilly Hopkins). It does not just end on 'and everyone lived happily ever after', which I appreciated although my 11 year old disliked that level of realism. One note for parents: part of the story is that the protagonist is in foster care because she was physical abused by her step-father. I started reading this aloud to my 8 year old (who lives with me and her new, not physically abusive, step-father), and we had to stop because she was getting too upset about it. It is a powerful story, and one that should be read. But you may want to really consider where your kid is emotionally before handing this one over. I'm hopeful my 8 year old will be ready to read it in a few years.

Easy read, but tough at the same time. However, I feel like I grew right along with the main character. This is a book that will make you experience every emotion - laughter, anger, sadness and love. Especially love for these characters and the hope that this story inspires. Read this book. You won't regret it.
I know it is a fiction story, but Lynda made them all feels so real. I want to know the rest of the story. How about a sequel? I want to know what happens next. This is the second book by Lynda Hunt and was not disappointed by either. I recommend this author!
A book I would recommend to anyone middle school-adult. This is one of those stories written for a younger audience that even adults will love. I cried my eyes out. This author is genius! I have read both her books and want to read more!!! Lynda, please keep writing!!
I read a child's review of this book and I had to read it and I was not disappointed. Carley Connors has landed in foster care after her step-father Dennis beats Carley and her mom. The Murphy family takes Carley and mom is Julie and so supportive. Dad is a firefighter who loves baseball and has to stay over at the firehouse some nights. There are 3 boys- Daniel (hates Carley), Eric Michael (so sweet) and Adam (so sweet too). But Carley has not had a great life (shopping in Goodwill dumpsters in the middle of the night with a flashlight) living in Las Vegas with a mom who thinks she has a daughter who is selfish and high maintenance. Each night Carley stays, she puts a tick mark on a poster on the wall and as she becomes more familiar with everyone in the family, she realizes she wants to be one of the Murphys too. But it is not an easy path. Carley does not tell her best friend she is a foster child, she runs away when she can't deal and no matter what---she will never cry! I couldn't stop turning the pages---Julie the mom was so supportive that Carley wanted to be mean rather than the nice that she was feeling inside. It is through her interactons with this family, she begins to see she deserves a family like this. What will happen to Carley? Will she stay with the Murphys?
I really love this story or redemption and forgiveness. The journey Carley Connors takes as she deals with the foster system and trying to figure out why her mother helped the man, her step-father, destroy their life is emotionally fulfilling. Carley must come to terms with what she thought happened to what really did happen as she grows to love the Murphy's, her foster family. Mrs. Murphy shows Carley what unconditional love is and teaches her that every child deserves this from their parents.
I read this book because my eight grade daughter was reading it for school. She started to read me a part of the book and I was so interested in it that I purchased it and read it. What a great storyline. Carly was a tough kid but it's only because she doesn't know how to love or be loved. Mrs Murphy shows her what unconditional love is and it makes her understand better on why these things are happening. I love this book. Going to read others from this author.
I loved this book. It's about Carley Connors who is finds herself in the foster care system and placed with the Murphys. The book is told in first person from the perspective of Carley and I felt the author really captured the angst, worry and vulnerability of a 12-year old child put with a family she doesn't know. The Murphys are a loving family who talk and hug and express themselves opening. This is all foreign to Carley. Mrs. Murphy tries to reach out to Carley and be her friend and confidant but Carley doesn't trust that - doesn't believe it's real. She's afraid to let her guard down and afraid that if she does, it will all disappear.
Carley does start to warm up to the family and find a place for herself with the Murphys but it's hard and not rushed and the author tells it in a way that is totally believable. This is the kind of book will pull at your heartstrings and make you want to go out and help a child in need or, if you have kids, hug them and let them know they are loved. It's very moving.
The one flaw with this book is the placement of Carley is totally unrealistic. Essentially Mrs. Murphy goes down to family services and says she wants to take in a foster child and they say "we just have one in . . . here you go". No background checks, no interviewing the family (the husband isn't keen on the idea of having a foster child), nothing. Just a "Hey I'm interested" and a "here you go" to having Carley placed. The rest of the story was so well told though that I could totally overlook that though.
Definitely one of the best books I've read this year - highly recommend it.
