So I'm posting this review of the second book directly after posting my review of the first book. I read them one right after the other. Both books had me so engrossed, even given the surprise ending of the first book, that I read both books in four days.

This books kinda/sorta picks up where the first book ends, but you do have to read it a bit before you figure out what the author is doing, and at that point, you start to get a glimpse of the madness that must be working in the authors mind. This is definitely not your stereotypical time-travel/alternate universe story. The author begins to work previous plot elements into the story in such a sinister way it becomes almost an "aha!" moment.

So now I'm hooked, and will have no qualms about picking up the third in the series, and if the author can keep up the pace, I will no doubt be following Farragut for several more boos.

Wolf Star Tour of the Merrimack #2 R M Meluch Books Reviews

This is an exciting, fun space opera military war adventure series. It is a futuristic alternate earth history story based on the premise that the Roman Empire never fell, but went underground until deep space travel and colonization was possible and they could come out of hiding, leave earth, and re-establish the empire in space where they run neck and neck with the US in an ongoing war of ideals and trade. There is intrigue, military shipboard life and action (feels like old wooden ships and sails navy stuff), interpersonal relationships, and a secret threat on the horizon. It's big, brash and colorful in a broad sweeping scope of story.

Wolf Star is part of the Tour of the Merrimack space opera series. It follows closely on the heals of the first book, The Myriad, so yes, listening in order is best.

I was tickled to death to learn that Wolf Star goes back to the beginning before the events of book one giving the reader the earlier days and now I was able to see how the situation with the war, the cast of characters and their backstories, and the new threat was discovered and the race to get a handle on things happened.

I was particularly glad of this because my one niggle about book one was feeling dropped into the middle of things and not really getting a chance to know the characters other than through their actions and dialogue. Now, some of the aspects of the war make better sense as do the allies and enemies assembled. There is also a good progression through broad events in the galaxy and specific events aboard Merrimack.

This is a series of books that are meant to be more swashbuckling fun high-seas style (just in space) war adventure than serious high-brow sci-fi. The ship has 'sails', flags, lists to the side when hit, creaks and groans, all just like an old-style ship. Colorful characters have a bit of caricature to them, but I didn't mind because of the tone of the book. The Captain, John Farragut is larger than life, his naval crew are capable and loyal, his Marines are gritty devil dog types, and the enemy are cunning. There are a few secret affairs of the heart or ones that are unrequited among the crew. The political types are annoying and the Romans make a formidable enemy that keep it life or death, but the enemy of both lurking in the wings offer the biggest heart-pounding adventure. My only niggle was I wanted more of my favorite cold, cynical Roman patterner, Augustus. He was there, but I missed the witty dialogues.

I continue to enjoy John Glouchevitch as the narrator for the series. He is a perfect match for the writing, tone, and pace. He has an absolute gift for keeping about twenty characters straight and putting heart and soul into a story that needed just the right balance of lightness and depth to make it work.

All in all, I had a good time with this one. I found Wolf Star as riveting and exciting as The Myriad. And now, I'm looking forward to moving on with this addicting sci-fi military/space opera series.
Old and new tech, old and new worlds and societies, and an enemy that even a pacifist can fight, (OR GET EATEN ALIVE).
Great Book
I love a good long space opera series. This one throws you for a good loop with a parallel universe twist in book #1, and you spend at least half of this book getting your head on straight. But it looks like it's all starting to catch up now, and the characters are engaging enough, if not compelling.
I read one of these books out of sequence, and I liked it so much, i decided to go back and read the whole series form Book 1. I really liked this series so I have bought and read all of them. Loved the "way-out in the galaxy" story-line, and the fight against a seemingly unstoppable alien foe.
Space opera done right. Occasionally a bit corny but dead on the most of the time. Characters you can sink your teeth into. The Marines are particularly well drawn,but none are cardboard cutouts. Lots of action without being dark or gratuitously violent. Serious without being grim. Meluch writes with a deftness that gives honor to the profession. Thank you,Ms. Meluch
I started reading this book with mixed feelings, having seen the reviews here about it. Some people felt betrayed by the ending in the first book, and almost had to fight to read the second book. Some only read the second book because they had already purchased it.

I liked this book very much. The way she shows just how completely history can be changed, from the global, epic scale of events down to the insignificant minutae of someone's life - it was almost awe inspiring to follow, remembering from the first book how it had been previously, and seeing what she wrote now.

I agree that some of the characters don't seem as "lovable" in the second book, but then again that was part of the whole point I believe. What happens to us makes us who we are, and if something had happened differently, we would be colored differently by those incidents. She does a great job of weaving this new reality into being. I can't wait to see where she goes with the next book in the series.
