The Nightingale Before Christmas A Meg Langslow Christmas Mystery Meg Langslow Mysteries Donna Andrews Books
These novels never disappoint me. There is family warmth, friendships, community togetherness, humor, and a darn good murder mystery thrown in for color. Now, I say color as this volume surrounded the 'show house' by twelve decorators for Christmas time this year in Caerphilly, Virginia. The decorators, including Meg's Mother, were enlisted to use a bank foreclosure as their showplace. Each decorator took a room and transformed it to their individual taste and used Christmas as their mutual theme.
And, what a variety of tastes the decorators have. From Gothic to Chintz. Not to mention the competing personalities of the Decorators themselves. Soon, it becomes evident that there is animosity and vandalism occurring within the project.
Meg, wife, mother of twins, and Blacksmith, finds herself the project manager. What a thankless job. The rooms are taking shape as she does a nightly safety walk and finds the dead body of Clay Spottiswood. Clay was severely disliked, and possesses a past life that may have lent to his early demise.
Can Meg help solve the crime before the now 'murder show house' is opened to the public?
The murder is surrounded with the tastes, feelings, excitement of Caerphilly's true enjoyment and celebration of Christmas. It made me wish the season was just around the corner. Excellent book!

The Nightingale Before Christmas A Meg Langslow Christmas Mystery Meg Langslow Mysteries Donna Andrews Books Reviews
It's Christmas, and Meg is trying to spend as much of it as she can with her husband and twin sons doing the traditional holiday things. Unfortunately, she's stuck babysitting a flock of squabbling interior decorators, including her mother. When the most obnoxious of the flock is done in, it's no surprise, but it puts a lot of pressure on poor Mag. Can she clear Mother, cope with her visiting mother-in-law and keep her sons from giving her the gift of hamsters before time runs out? You absolutely must read the book to find out! (And then go back and re-read them all!)
Not sure what happened to the parade from the first Christmas book, but most of the Duck the Halls traditions are here plus a new one. A show house for decorators is open with all sorts of cat fighting. When one of them ends up dead and his room destroyed, Meg has to manage all the decorators and still try to get it off without a hitch.
The killer was obvious from the way a clue was worded long before the murder even occurred. The motive was mostly wrapped up by then as well. Still lots of fun along the way. Excellent Christmas spirit as well.
Reading the Nightingale before Christmas was like reading a Christmas letter from home. You cant wait to hear about Meg, about her parents, her husband and children, and about all of the familiar characters in Caerphilly. In this letter, Meg has volunteered to oversee decorating a show house for Christmas, with the winning proceeds going to charity. All seems to be going well until one of the decorators is found dead as a doornail. There are keys being lost, walls being destroyed, and Christmas chaos abounds. Meg tries to figure out whodunit while trying to stay on schedule. not an easy task since her list contains Christmas carol with the family, attending her husbands one man show, and the yearly Christmas play that her twins are in. The only good news is that her mother in law is cooking Christmas dinner.
I was disappointed. I love this series as a whole but this felt like a throw away. It was too short and very skimpy on the recurring characters. Yes, there was a flock of decorators, but Michael was barely in the book at all. Not to mention her dad, her grandfather, Rob, etc. And Pam seems to have been forgotten altogether. I hope the next installment uses the rich back story and characters Donna Andrews has established.
Curled up and enjoy another Christmas in Caerphilly where Meg is in charge of the volunteers house decorating group. Packages have gone missing and minor accidents have occurred in several of the rooms. They appear to be all caused by one decorator. He has the master bedroom and is not like by the other decorators. Randall Shiffley is busy fixing all mishaps. One evening, returning to check on something at the house, several shots are fired at Meg. The prime suspect in the disappearance of the mail and the damage is found dead. All Meg's family and friends are present in the book. The twins are 5 years and are buying Meg's gift. Their ideas are amusing. Will Meg succeed in finding the murderer so the house can be open Christmas open on time? I can't recommend this book and series highly enough.
I know, I know, I almost always say I love a book, but then I tend to stick with authors I love and I LOVE Donna Andrews and the cast of characters in her books. I like it that Andrews' books are continuing tales of Meg Langslow and her family and the murders she ends of finding and solving. I don't know how Andrews does it but she makes murder at Christmas fun, so I really look forward to her Christmas oriented books! This one centers on Meg's mother and a cast of unique interior designers decorating a Christmas show house with Meg keeping them headed in the right direction even after one of the designers ends up dead!
The neat thing about Andrews' books is that you can pick up one from anywhere in the series and they make sense without her having to fill in a lot of details from previous books. They really do stand alone well. But saying that I think if you read this and haven't read her other books, you will want to!
